Coating System: Brush Blast, Epoxy Primer, Super Durable White (This coating system provides two layers for lasting protection, and a super durable top coat that will ensure lasting gloss and color retention.)
Challenge: Aegis Industrial Finishing was approached by its customer with three of these aluminum spiral staircases. At over 10′ in height and 9′ in diameter, their size posed a challenge when the customer specified powder coating as the finish of choice. With our 10′ x 10′ x 38′ oven, we were able to accomodate these staircases and even bake two units at one time. We were able to deliver the product to the customers satisfaction, on time, and within budget.
They were installed on a new development in Vancouver, B.C.
Problem: In the past, the customer was having the bulkheads processed with only a degrease and single coat of black speed enamel. While the end result looked good initially, it did not take long for rust to develop on the sharp edges of the expanded metal grating that made up the panel.
Solution: Aegis proposed a blast to SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast) and a two coat system using an epoxy primer and exterior grade polyester top coat. The blasting effectively removed the scale and rust present on the steel, and the epoxy provided superior edge coverage which fully enveloped the expanded metal.
Result: The client informed us that the warranty claims on this component has dropped significantly and the units that sit in the yard look new once they are finally installed on the customers vehicles.
Problem: One of the municipalities in the lower mainland has hundreds of park gates that their maintenance department is responsible to maintain. Prior to working with Aegis, the specification for their gates was either wet paint over galvanize or wet paint over mild steel. Over the life of the gate it would be repainted each summer season by summer students, and over time the appearance of the gates would become a combination of rust and blotchy paint.
Solution: Aegis proposed a remove and rework program that would see existing gates stripped and recoated in a two coat system that would provide 5+ years service for the maintenance department. In addition to stripping and recoating the park gates, Aegis also affixed reflective tape according to the maintenance departments requirements.
Result: Working with the maintenance department, Aegis was able to improve the aesthetics of the parks by providing an entirely new coating system that would last the abuse and exposure that gates receive. Furthermore, the maintenance cost for the gates was reduced significantly by eliminating the need for regular recoating, and the environmental impact of applying liquid painting in the field was also negated.
Three Color Tree
Problem: The vision that the artist had for this particular piece required a 5 coat system. A primer coat was applied, and then three distinct colors were blended to create a gradient from light to dark at particular points on the project. As it was meant for public enjoyment, the piece was then protected with a clear coat that would provide anti-graffiti protection.
Solution: Recognizing the unique requirements for this job, invited the artist to our shop on a Saturday when we could direct all of our focus on this one project. Preplanning was done to ensure that everyone was clear on the outcome that we were working towards and the coating was done. The piece was blasted all over, and any voids or pits were filled prior to applying the primer coat.
Result: The job turned out better than we could have expected and Aegis has since processed many more high quality and unique jobs for local artists.
